[HLMainPic] James Alexander Turner was born at Montreal, Canada in 1891, educated at Highfield School, Hamilton, Ontario and graduated from the Canadian Royal Military College at Kingston in 1913, becoming a civil engineer and an officer in the Canadian Corps of Guides. Volunteered for overseas service in 1914 and went to England with 9th Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force; transferred to Royal Scots in February 1915; joined 2nd Battalion in Flanders in April; wounded at Hooge in August, again at Loos the following month and after some months of convalescence returned to the Front in October 1916, joining the 13th (Service) Battalion; promoted to Major and won D.S.O. at Arras, and again wounded in the same battle; won M.C. at Ypres in August and appointed second-in-command in November, then attended Senior Officers' Course at Aldershot from January-March 1918. Rejoining his Battalion, he was promoted to command it in May. He was killed in action at Buzancy, near Soissons, on 26th July 1918, aged twenty-seven, and is buried in Vauxbuin French National Cemetery. A slim but large format, lavishly produced volume compiled by the subject's uncle. Includes biography (with letters to the compiler from school), an account of his military career including the deeds for which he was awarded the D.S.O. and M.C., his report from the Senior Officers' School ('The best officer in my syndicate'), and his death, when he was killed at 2.30 in the morning by the explosion of a shell in his headquarters having just come in from going round his companies. Includes a few extracts from his letters and several letters of condolence from brother officers etc. White mock vellum, blindstamped and gilt blocked with decorative scroll bearing short title "In Memoriam Lieutenant Colonel James Alexander Turner D.S.O.
