[HLMainPic] Alexander (Alick) Dobrée Young-Herries, was the son of Lieutenant-Colonel William Dobrée Young-Herries (K.O.S.B.) and Mrs Bethia Marion Young-Herries, of Spottes, Kircudbrightshire, was born in 1892 at Edinburgh, educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. Some months before the war he had obtained a Special Reserve commission in the 3rd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers and joined the 2nd Battalion in France in September 1914. He served at the Aisne, the First and Second battles of Ypres, Somme etc., much of the time as commander of "B" Company, until killed in action by shellfire near High Wood before dawn on 22nd July 1916. He had recently played a distinguished part in the attack between High Wood and Longueval on 20th June. He was twenty-four and is buried in Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz. Contains a full account of his active service including extracts from his letters and concluding with extracts from letters of condolence. Includes several interesting photos. at the Front (a front line position, officers and sergeants of "B" Coy., 2nd K.O.S.B. officers group), also a memorial window erected in his memory at Urr Parish Church in 1921.
