A collation of the distinguished North-West Frontier commander's (founder of Brownlow's Punjabis in 1857) papers, letters & thoughts: all but six of the 40 chapters relate to NWF warfare & Afghanistan, notably the author's recollections of Umbeylah, 1863 (8pp.), extracts from Despatches from that campaign (18pp.) & material on many others inc. the NWF in 1895, 1897 & 1908, the Afghan War 1878, &c. Also opinions on military training, Indian policy & military affairs, &c. Some had been published in various journals & The Times newspaper, but some new material, including unpublished letters to The Times, is included. Orig. dec. red cloth, gilt, sp. cloth stained & worn, generally sound, internally with small label pasted to front board stating Not For Publication & presentation inscrip. "H.B. Watkiss from the Author. Nov. '09." (i.e, Lt. Gen. H.B.B. Watkiss, GOC Lahore Div. in F&F 1914 until dismissed by Willcocks in Jan. 1915.)
