The Group System - or Derby Scheme - was a system by which men could register their willingness to serve on the promise that they would not be called up until needed, and married men would not be called until the single men had been: "Do Not Force Your Country to Force You to Fight, But Come Of Your Own Free Will" - conscription arrived the following year, however.
