Classic Western Front memoirs. Carstairs, an American, was commissioned in the RFA in 1914, seeing action with D/50 Battery at Loos before transferring to the Grenadier Guards in Nov. 1915. Served a total of eleven months with 3rd Bn. in France between 1916-18 until badly wounded four days before the armistice. Awarded MC at Bourlon Wood 1917. Carroll Chevalier Carstairs was a son of Charles S. Carstairs, London representative of American art dealers Knoedler & Co. Carstairs senior died in 1928, by which time both father & son were part owners of the Knoedler business. Carroll subsequently opened his own gallery in New York.
