An erudite work roaming from the BC battles of Salamis & Actium down to Santiago 1898, including discourses on several Napoleonic & American Civil War battles such as the Nile 1798, 'Foudroyant' & 'Guillaume Tell' 1800, Trafalgar, Lake Erie 1813, 'Monitor' & 'Merrimac' 1862, Mobile Bay 1864 &c. Note: Edward Kirk Rawson (1846-1934) was a distinguished naval scholar: graduated at Yale in 1868 & served as a chaplain in the US Navy 1871-1890. He was appointed to head the Dept. of Ethics & English Studies at the US Naval War College in 1888 & Superintendent Naval War Records in 1897. He wrote various essays &c. but this was his main contribution to naval history. This well-illustrated work contains a wealth of detail on the battles described & various informative related material in the notes & appendices. The plates & maps are excellent, as is the text. Contemp. full green calf presentation binding (for Bedford Modern School), gilt rules to boards (with the school's crest centred), richly gilt sps., with raised bands & claret lettering labels, sps., little browned, little rubbed, marbled edges, some foxing to eps, generally VG indeed.
