Interesting compilation containing specially commissioned pieces by ten contributors, all of whom had first-hand experience on which to draw, which addresses some interesting aspects such as Rumours at the Front; By-ways of Army Slang; War from the Ranks &c., divided into three parts: The Conceivably True; Concerning the True & Actually True. The first contains four pieces (by C.W. Grundy, 'Miles', John Brophy & Corrie Denison); the second three pieces (by Stephen Southwold, John Brophy & Eric Partridge) & the third, four pieces (by Norman Hancock, Charles Edmonds [pseud. of Charles Carrington], E.C. Pattison & Conal O'Riordan). Only edition, of which 1000 copies were printed, 75 being specially bound with superior paper & cloth, numbered & signed in ink by the contributors, but this example one of the 'trade' edition. Orig. orange cloth, gilt, little marked, about VG in worn bur neatly restored dw (loss at foot of sp. & edges, sp. panel dampmarked) with presentation inscrip. "For Henry Williamson with very warm regards from 2 of the various hands to wit 'Miles' Stephen Southwold May 29 1937." Southwold contributed "Rumours at the Front" while "Miles" (possibly also Southwold) wrote the chapter titled "Three Episodes of the War." Extensive notes by HW to rear eps referencing various incidents & likely providing material for 'Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight.' See illustrations on our website.
