[HLMainPic] Brig.-Gen. Philip Howell CMG, son of Col. Horace Howell of the Punjab Frontier Force, & Ella Howell (his second cousin), was born in 1877. Ed. at Lancing & Sandhurst, & after three years service joined the Cavalry of the Queen's Own Corps of Guides in 1900. He remained with that foremost of Indian Army regiments until promoted to Major in the 4th Hussars in August 1913; embroiled in Curragh incident the following May (sympathetic to the Gough although hardly in a position to retire) & to France in Aug. as 2nd in command; took over command on the death of Ian Hogg in the Retreat from Mons; became BGGS Cav. Corps in March 1915 then BGGS II Corps & KIA by shellfire at Authuille on the Ancre /10/16. A rather late memorial volume, compiled by his wife some years before publication. Howell is considered to have been an outstanding soldier with great potential. This interesting & intimate biography, inc. detailed letters containing much of interest from the point of view of the thinking professional officer, offers much on the Army of 1914, notably the cavalry, & the conduct of operations on the Western Front.
