The subject was a terrier found in France (by one Pte. James Donovan, a linesman in the Signal Corps) & adopted as the US 1st Division's mascot. Rags was not purely ceremonial: he carried messages at the Front & warned (by his behaviour) of incoming shell fire. He was wounded & gassed at the Meuse-Argonne alongside his master, now Sgt. Donovan. Incredibly, this is all true. Orig. green cloth, titled in paler green, VG in chipped dw. See illustrations on our website.
