Raven Cozens-Hardy was Ed. at Kendal Grammar School, Marcon's Hall and Exeter College, Oxford, before joining a firm of city stockbrokers. He enlisted in the Inns of Court O.T.C. in September 1914 and received a commission in the 4th Bn. Norfolk Regiment (Territorial Force) a month later; he spent a considerable time on training duties in England with the 11th (Reserve) Bn. but was eventually attached to the 1st Bn. in France in 1917 and fell in action at Polderhoek during the Third Battle of Ypres. He was thirty-one, has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. This memorial consists almost entirely of extracts from letters of condolence, local press notices and so forth, including accounts of his death in action ("It was a dull October morning when at dawn our Battalion went over the top, and it was whilst gallantly leading his company against one of Fritz's pill boxes that he, like the true soldier that he was, met his death.").
